The Office of International Exchange Participant files (1956- 1974) contain correspondence, participant reports and applications, letters of recommendation, college grades, and health and insurance records of participants of the Lutheran World Federation's (LWF) Department of World Service's Church Workers Exchange program, the Berlin Service Assignment program and of special guests and visitors sponsored by the U.S.A. National Committee of the Lutheran World Federation (USANC). Correspondence regards Church Workers Exchange and Berlin Service Assignment participants' application to and activities, experiences, and problems in the. Programs as well as their experiences upon returning home. Berlin Service Assignment general correspondence files include participant reports and job descriptions, and discussion regarding program and participant arrangements and expenses. Correspondents include Ruth C. Wick, Director of the Office of International Exchange, individual participants, and LWF officials. Also included are files regarding travel arrangements and applications for special guests, professors, lecturers, and visitors to the U.S.

The Office of International Exchange was established in 1956 under the National Lutheran Council (NLC) to direct the American part of the LWF's exchange programs. In 1961, the Berlin Service Assignment program was developed as part of the Department of World Service's Church Workers Exchange to address Lutheran needs in the recently divided city.
